The Physics of Tennis

Direction

Direction is a very important concept because it impacts Tennis in many various ways. The Webster’s Dictionary defines direction as; the act of directing, aiming, guiding, regulating, or ordering. And also as; the line along which anything lies, faces, moves, with reference to the point or area toward which it is directed. So tying this into Tennis, a tennis ball‘s direction can be changed easily with a forehand, backhand, topspin, and or backspin (As shown in Video). A forehand in tennis is a swing with the palm moving forward to hit the ball. You can change a ball’s direction from left to right with a forehand. In a backhand, you strike the ball with the back of your hands facing out with the arm moving forward. Topspin is hit by sliding the racket up and over the ball as it is hit. And by sliding the racket up and over the ball, you can change and control where you want the ball to go. The backspin is the opposite; you slide the racket under as it is hit. This allows the player to change the direction the ball was hit. Also the direction of the players may change when volleying. In doubles, players change direction when serving, they might move up to the service line. Now that was just a few ways direction ties into Tennis.
